  • human•kind // be both Last week, I had the privilege of volunteering at work with some co-workers. We handed out free lunches at a local park to kids, any age, race, economic background, religion, didn't matter. All kids were welcomed. We had a slow turn out so we were offering seconds, even thirds. A little boy, about 5 or 6, came through the line again, no parent in tow. He looked a little lost and not sure where to start, and he was swallowed by the rush of older kids who knew exactly what to do. I left my post (napkin girl is a serious job) to help him out. We grabbed his bag and picked out some condiments, but I realized he skipped grabbing his milk. "Oh, do you want a milk? Let's get you a milk. Regular or chocolate?" "Regular!" "Okay, let's put it in your bag and let's grab you some napkins too." As I was stuffing napkins into his bag, he said with pure joy, "You know what? You're the BEST! Can we be friends??" Y'all. My heart melted. Into a huge puddle right there in the park. 😭❤ The simplest of tasks made this kid's day. And I'm sure he forgot about it as soon as he got back to his table and started eating his seconds. But for that moment, we were best friends. In that moment, he was being human and vulnerable, expressing his feelings and asking such a risky question. Isn't it funny how little kids just say it how it is and it's like they have no fear of the outcome? As we get older, we experience more hurt and pain. Our instinct is to protect and guard. But when we let that guard down and offer kindness, we can be available to receive great things. Are we at risk for getting hurt? Of course, almost always when we open ourselves to new experiences. I'll be honest and be the first to admit, I haven't been the best at this. I've been hurt and hurt deeply. My first reaction in a moment of vulnerability is to withdraw and recede. I'm learning and trying to practice this new way of thinking and reacting in new situations. And now, I can always refer back to this little boy and his bravery in asking such a simple, but scary question. Until the week I was moving from OKC to Oregon. Then one opened up minutes from my house 🙄 Naturally. To say I was bummed is an understatement. I needed to know what all the hype was about!   • Wow. Thank you thank you thank you. For all the support on my last post 💕 I had no idea it would resonate with so many people. If I'm being honest, I was selfishly writing for myself, for my healing, but in doing so, it helped others. I'm so grateful for this space and community 🙏 On days where I just want to sign off and throw in the towel because writing and blogging isn't the easiest (and most days I feel less than adequate), these are the moments that keep me going. Receiving private messages about how it helped you or how you needed to hear those words that day - those messages will always trump the number of likes, followers, and page views. Since there are a few new faces, I figured I'd do #fridayintroductions 🤓 so hi y'all 👋 my name is Danielle, and I write here in these little squares and over on my blog (link in my bio) from time to time, where I write all things lifestyle + encouragement + grief. I'm a 32 yr old widow (you can read more about that on my About page ☺), learning that there are all types of grief in life. I've lost more than I ever imagined I would since losing my husband. But I'm slowly discovering who I am again and what I really want out of this life.   • I wrote a new post. It's not about clothes or the next big trend or my favorite winery or the best place to grab brunch. It's real, raw, definitely not going to get me any sponsored posts, and I didn't run it by anyone before hitting publish. But it's from the depths of my heart. And if I'm being honest, it was more for me and the two men I wrote it to than anyone else.
